Selection Trials 2019

Optimist Selections 2019

For me I found this a very challenging event. We had 4 days solid racing and managed to get in 12 fair races. 2 light wind days ( 5-10 knts), one windy day (15-25knts) and one perfect day of wind (10-15knts).

As last year I got the Europeans which took place in Scheveningen, Netherlands I felt like I had lots of pressure to either get the Euros again or the Worlds. During the event I slowly got passed that thought all because of my dads amazing pep talks and just enjoyed the event as much as I could and learn new things.

Thankfully none of my races were too bad and I stayed pretty consistent throughout the week. My best result was a 14th which surprisingly was on the heavy wind day. The first day was so good, not only was the wind really nice but it was sunny too which left smiles all around! This day I did ok. Starting was very hard as there was so much line sag and lots of huddles across the line, so that made it hard to find a comfortable place on the line and holding your lane.

Day 2 was mental. The windiest part of the day was the morning. I've never really been comfortable  at sailing in heavy winds. But not this time. This day was one of the best days I've ever had sailing for sure. I did really well and was very consistent. In the strong winds though the reaching was even better than getting top 20's as it was so windy and fast.

Day 3/4 was hard. There wasn't much wind or movement around but lots of seals and barrel jellyfish. We only did 3 races on day 3 and 1 on the last day. Unfortunately I could have done better on these two days but got still got results around the 30's. In all of the races fleet was really close and the difference between 10th and 30th was hardly anything at all.

The selection trial is a tough event but we stayed with our friends though which took my mind off it in the evening and we had lots of fun and enjoyed my dads birthday which was full of surprises.

After a tricky 4 days of sailing it finally came to the end. And time to look at the results, eek! I hadn't looked at them all weekend up to now. I was so happy with where I came, 31st and 6th girl. So this means I made Development team, yay!! Although dev team is one below Euros I'm still extremely happy with it. It will take place in Tallinn Estonia, at the end of June. So a very successful event and more sailing to come next weekend with training then in 2 weekends time the Inland Championship which is a ranking event.
